Hydrogen is a key pillar to achieve the targets of the global decarbonization strategy, as it has a fundamental role in decarbonizing the Hard-to-abate industrial sector and in enabling renewables integration into the grid by sector coupling. Still, supplying hydrogen at low cost and in a sustainable way is a huge technological and systemic challenge.

The new technological frontier for this is turquoise hydrogen, generated from the methane pyrolysis (thermal decomposition), which is the breaking down of methane to produce hydrogen and solid carbon, a process with no emissions of carbon dioxide. This reaction occurs at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen.

CO2 liquefaction is the process of converting gaseous carbon dioxide into its liquid form, making it a versatile and transportable resource. This transformation allows for efficient storage, transportation, and utilisation of CO2 in various applications.

CO2 liquefaction plays a crucial role in carbon capture and storage initiatives. By capturing CO2 emissions from industrial processes, we avoid releasing that CO2 into the atmosphere, thus not incrementing GHG concentration. The subsequent step of CO2 liquefaction allows for different kind of usage: from safe transportation and permanent storage underground or in depleted oil and gas reservoirs, to its integration into various industrial processes.

As Pietro Fiorentini, we can integrate CO2 recovery and liquefaction systems with upgrading plants. This allows to capture and transform the off-gas coming from biogas upgrading into high-quality valuable product. With the use of advanced technologies such as membrane upgrading and a new distillation process, our systems can successfully purify and liquefy CO2 avoiding methane slip form the upgrading process. The final product is liquid food-grade CO2 that can be used in the food and beverage sector as a green substitute of the fossil CO2 previously used.

The cryo-polish process involves the use of cryogenic temperatures to selectively remove impurities, such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and water vapor, from the biogas stream. By leveraging the different condensation points of these components, the cryo-polish technique can effectively purify the biomethane, resulting in a higher-quality product that meets stringent industry standards.

Cryo-polished biomethane liquefaction is an innovative technology that offers significant advantages in the production and utilization of renewable natural gas. This process involves the cryogenic treatment of biomethane, which enhances its purity and energy density, making it a more efficient and environmentally friendly fuel source.

One of the primary benefits of cryo-polished biomethane liquefaction is the increased purity of the final product. The cryogenic process effectively removes impurities such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and other contaminants, resulting in a biomethane stream that meets the highest quality standards. This improved purity translates to higher energy content and reduced emissions when the fuel is combusted.

Additionally, the liquefaction process allows for more efficient storage and transportation. Liquefied biomethane occupies significantly less volume compared to its gaseous counterpart, making it a more practical choice for long-distance transportation and storage in confined spaces.

Hyter is a company operating in the hydrogen sector since 2011 that joined Pietro Fiorentini Group in July 2021. The company develops solutions to generate green hydrogen through water electrolysis, with a wide range of size, from from kW to multi-MW.

AEMWE (proprietary) and PEM technologies are the core of Hyter’s electrolysers: while the first one is based on anionic exchange membrane, the second exploits protonic and exchange membrane.

Both technologies allow to satisfy multiple needs within the energy transition process. For example, they enable hydrogen storage, thus stabilizing the variability of the production of electricity from renewable sources, very often not aligned with consumption. There are also several other applications, like sustainable mobility, sector coupling or industrial applications.

Hydrogen is finally granting a key role in the energy arena. It is a precious molecule with the property of being easily produced from renewable power and representing a complementary solution to other green gases and to electrification process, especially as sustainable vehicles fuel and as industrial high temperatures energy carrer.
On the other hand, the need of a large scale use of hydrogen is pushing gas infrastructure to drastically evolve. Pietro Fiorentini is applying its international 80 years experience on gas networks to face this exciting challenge: from designing and testing hydrogen ready solutions up to developing new hydrogen blending stations, our purpose is to exploit the full potential of existing gas networks to accept and deliver hydrogen.

Biogas is a naturally generated gaseous fuel, which mainly contains methane and carbon dioxide, together with water and other contaminants in traces. With proper treatment and purification, biogas can be transformed into biomethane, a sustainable substitute of natural gas, that can be injected into the existing gas grid.

Pietro Fiorentini’s complete and integrated biogas upgrading solution – FIOGrade allows to efficiently remove water and contaminants (like sulphur, ammonia and organic compounds), while separating out carbon dioxide thanks to membranes filtration. The entire process allows to recover around 99,5% of the methane contained in input biogas, producing a pure stream that can be directly injected into the gas grid.
